CKD often develops gradually and may cause no obvious symptoms early on. Clinicians identify and monitor it with blood tests that estimate filtering function, urine tests for protein or blood, blood-pressure checks, and sometimes imaging.

The kidneys remove waste and extra fluid, balance salts and acid, support red-blood-cell production, and help regulate blood pressure and bone health. As CKD advances, fluid, minerals, and waste can accumulate, and anaemia or changes in bone and heart health may develop.

Hypertension and type 2 diabetes are important conditions associated with CKD, and kidney disease can make blood pressure harder to control. Fatigue, ankle swelling, itching, nausea, breathlessness, sleep disturbance, or changes in urination may occur, but their presence does not identify the cause without tests.

Attend planned blood, urine, and blood-pressure checks even when you feel well. Take prescribed medicines consistently, avoid smoking, stay active within your ability, and follow personalised advice about salt, fluids, protein, potassium, or phosphate rather than applying a restrictive kidney diet on your own.

Before using painkillers, supplements, herbal products, or contrast for a scan, tell the clinician or pharmacist that you have CKD. Some products need avoidance or dose adjustment because reduced kidney function changes how the body handles them. Illness with vomiting or diarrhoea also warrants advice about fluids and regular medicines.

Contact a clinician promptly for a marked reduction in urine, rapidly increasing swelling, repeated vomiting, new confusion, worsening breathlessness, or sudden weakness. These changes can signal an acute problem on top of chronic kidney disease.

Call emergency services for severe difficulty breathing, collapse, seizures, chest pain, or inability to stay awake. Do not try to correct suspected salt or fluid problems with supplements unless a clinician has checked the cause.

Ask what your blood and urine results mean over time, which medicines protect kidney function, whether any doses need changing, and what sick-day instructions apply. Clarify your personal targets for blood pressure, glucose management, diet, activity, and the timing of follow-up tests.
