Ano ang cellulitis? What to know about this skin infection

It commonly presents with an area that becomes red, warm, swollen, and tender. The affected edge may be poorly defined, and the patch can enlarge. Cellulitis is not the same as cellulite, which is harmless skin dimpling.

Bacteria can enter through cracked, cut, ulcerated, or inflamed skin, although the opening may be too small to notice. A fungal infection between the toes, such as athlete's foot, can create a break in the skin. Leg swelling and diabetes can also make infection harder to prevent or manage.

Cellulitis often affects one lower leg, but it can develop anywhere. Fever or feeling unwell may accompany the skin changes. A clinician may diagnose it from the appearance and examination while considering look-alikes such as a blood clot, allergic reaction, or inflammatory rash.

Arrange a medical assessment promptly if a new area is hot, painful, swollen, and spreading. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Resting and elevating an affected arm or leg can ease swelling.

Keep broken skin clean and covered, avoid squeezing the area, and do not share leftover antibiotics. You may lightly mark the redness boundary with the date and time to help track spread, but do not delay care while monitoring it. Follow the clinician's advice about pain relief and wound care.

Seek urgent care for rapidly expanding redness, severe or escalating pain, red streaks, pus, blistering, skin turning dusky or black, numbness, confusion, faintness, fast breathing, or marked drowsiness. Fever with worsening skin changes also needs prompt attention because cellulitis can spread beyond the original area.

Get earlier advice if the infection is near an eye, follows an animal or human bite, or occurs with poor circulation, immune suppression, or diabetes. Contact the treating clinician if symptoms worsen after antibiotics begin or are not starting to settle as expected.

Ask what features support cellulitis, whether a wound needs special care, and when improvement should become noticeable. Clarify which changes mean you should return urgently. If infections recur, discuss possible entry points such as toe-web cracks, eczema, wounds, or persistent limb swelling and how to manage them.
