Eye inflammation in ankylosing spondylitis

Uveitis is inflammation inside the eye, not simple surface irritation. Symptoms often begin quickly and may involve one eye, though any suspected episode needs an eye examination rather than self-diagnosis.

Anterior uveitis affects the front portion of the eye. Pain can feel deep or aching, the eye may look red around the coloured part, and bright light may be difficult to tolerate. Vision can become hazy, and focusing for reading may worsen discomfort.

A red eye can also result from infection, a scratched cornea, glaucoma, or other problems. Uveitis associated with ankylosing spondylitis is one possible explanation, but its presence must be confirmed by an eye professional using a detailed examination.

Contact an ophthalmology service or urgent medical service promptly and say that you have ankylosing spondylitis or axial spondyloarthritis. Describe pain, redness, light sensitivity, vision change, which eye is affected, when symptoms began, and any previous uveitis episodes.

Do not use leftover steroid eye drops or another person's drops. Eye specialists choose treatment after confirming the cause and checking eye pressure and internal structures. Continue systemic medicines unless the treating team advises a change, and bring a current medicine list to the visit.

A painful red eye, marked sensitivity to light, new floaters, or blurred vision warrants urgent same-day guidance because untreated inflammation may threaten sight. Go to emergency care immediately for sudden loss of vision, a severe eye injury, or a chemical splash after beginning appropriate rinsing.

Mild itchiness and watery discharge can have other causes, but persistent symptoms still deserve assessment if you are uncertain. The urgency comes from the eye symptoms themselves, not from how commonly they occur in ankylosing spondylitis.

Ask which signs should prompt direct return to eye care, how prescribed drops should be tapered, and when eye pressure should be checked. If episodes recur, ask whether the pattern changes how rheumatology and ophthalmology coordinate your wider treatment.
