Ankylosing spondylitis and eye inflammation

This inflammation often affects the front part of the eye and may begin suddenly. Symptoms can occur in one eye and may return at another time. A painful red eye should not be assumed to be simple irritation.

Uveitis is inflammation within the eye, not an infection on its surface. Redness may be most noticeable near the coloured part of the eye, while discomfort can worsen in bright light. Vision may look hazy or develop floating spots. Some people also experience headache around the affected eye.

An eye specialist examines the eye with magnification to confirm the location and severity of inflammation. Early treatment helps control inflammation and reduce the chance of damage inside the eye. Joint symptoms and eye symptoms may not flare at the same time.

Contact an eye-care service promptly for a new painful red eye, light sensitivity, or a change in vision, and mention the ankylosing spondylitis diagnosis. Do not use leftover steroid eye drops or another person's drops; the wrong treatment can mask infection or raise pressure in the eye.

Continue prescribed systemic medicines unless the treating clinician advises a change. Bring an up-to-date medicine list to the eye appointment. Sunglasses may ease light sensitivity while you are arranging care, but they do not treat the inflammation.

Seek same-day eye assessment for eye pain with redness, marked sensitivity to light, blurred vision, or new floaters. Go to emergency care if vision suddenly drops, a dark curtain or shadow crosses the visual field, flashing lights appear with new floaters, or severe eye pain occurs with nausea.

Rapid assessment is driven by these eye warning signs, whether joint disease currently feels active or quiet. Mention any previous uveitis because recurrence can influence the examination and treatment choice.

Ask the eye specialist what type of inflammation is present, how the prescribed drops should be spaced, and which side effects need attention. Ask the rheumatology clinician whether recurring eye episodes affect the wider treatment plan and how the two teams will share updates.
