Understanding Angular Cheilitis

It can appear as a tender split, redness, scaling or crusting on one or both sides. Saliva exposure commonly damages the fold, but infection, irritation and health-related factors may influence which treatment is appropriate.

Angular refers to the angles of the mouth, not the centre of the lip. The affected skin may sting when salty or acidic food touches it and can split again when the mouth opens. Similar changes can arise from contact dermatitis, cold sores and other lip disorders.

Moisture in a deep mouth fold, repeated licking, drooling, dry mouth or an ill-fitting dental appliance can weaken the barrier. Yeast or bacteria may then contribute. Repeat episodes sometimes warrant a broader check for oral, nutritional or medical factors.

Rinse away food gently, pat the corners dry and apply a small amount of bland fragrance-free barrier ointment. Try to stop licking the area, avoid picking crusts and temporarily set aside flavoured balms or cosmetics that sting.

A pharmacist or clinician can help decide whether the presentation needs prescription treatment. Bring a list of products already tried and mention dental appliances, dry-mouth symptoms and how often it returns. Avoid experimenting with leftover antibiotic, antifungal or steroid creams.

Have the area assessed when it persists despite gentle protection, repeatedly returns, extends away from the mouth angle or becomes increasingly crusted or swollen. Fever, pus, severe tenderness or redness spreading across the face calls for prompt medical care.

Call for urgent help if swelling affects breathing or swallowing. People with diabetes or reduced immune function should seek earlier advice for a worsening lesion because infection may need timely treatment.
