How to Help Cracked Lip Corners Heal

How the structures involved in Cheilitis differ from normal

Short answer

Protect cracked lip corners from saliva and irritation, but seek treatment if angular cheilitis persists or worsens.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First priority
Reduce saliva contact and friction
Avoid
Licking, picking and fragranced products
If recurrent
Look for an ongoing local or health-related driver

What helps first

Gently pat the area dry after eating and drinking, then apply a thin layer of plain, fragrance-free barrier ointment. Faster improvement depends on correcting the driver, which may be repeated wetting, local irritation or an infection that needs a specific medicine.

Why the corners crack

The mouth angles bend and stretch whenever you speak, yawn or eat. If saliva sits there, the outer barrier softens and splits. The result can be soreness, redness, scaling or a fissure that opens again with movement.

Angular cheilitis can affect one side or both. Yeast or bacteria may take advantage of damaged, damp skin, while lip licking, drooling, dry mouth, dental appliances and some skin conditions can maintain the cycle.

Care for the area

Wash with lukewarm water rather than harsh cleansers, pat instead of rubbing, and reapply the bland barrier when saliva or food removes it. Take smaller bites if wide mouth opening repeatedly splits the skin. Do not peel crusts, bite loose skin or share towels and lip products.

Skip fragranced balms, scrubs, strong antiseptics and unprescribed combination creams. A clinician may recommend an antifungal, antibacterial or anti-inflammatory treatment after assessing the pattern. Using the wrong active ingredient can delay recovery or aggravate irritation.

Signs you need care

Book a clinical review when a crack repeatedly reopens, does not start improving, spreads, produces discharge or returns soon after clearing. Prompt assessment is appropriate if redness is advancing into nearby skin, swelling rises quickly, pain becomes severe or fever develops.

Trouble breathing or swallowing requires urgent help. Mention recurrent mouth ulcers, tongue soreness, dry mouth, denture problems, diabetes or medicines that affect immunity because these clues may guide evaluation.

Useful questions at an appointment

You can ask what is keeping the corner moist, whether infection is suspected, how long to use each recommended product and how dental fit should be checked. If episodes recur, ask whether examination of the rest of the mouth or tests for an underlying contributor would help.

Questions people ask

Should I let a cracked mouth corner dry out completely?

Keep it clean and pat away excess moisture, but a thin bland barrier can shield the fissure from saliva and movement. Avoid repeatedly wetting and air-drying it.

Can I use lip balm on angular cheilitis?

A plain, fragrance-free barrier is less likely to irritate than flavoured or medicated balm. Stop any product that increases stinging, redness or swelling.

Why does the split open again when I eat?

Opening the mouth stretches the angle and can pull a fragile surface apart. Smaller bites and barrier protection may reduce this mechanical stress while the cause is addressed.
