Oral factors linked with angular cheilitis

It is a skin inflammation at the junction of the lips, not necessarily a problem originating inside the mouth. Oral conditions matter because they can change moisture, microbes and the depth of the corner folds.

Drooling, lip licking or reduced control of saliva can keep the corners damp. Dentures that no longer support the bite well may deepen the folds, while braces or dental appliances can make cleaning and drying more difficult.

Candida yeast normally lives in many mouths without causing trouble, but oral thrush can coexist with sore corners. White patches inside the mouth that wipe away and leave a red surface, altered taste or mouth soreness are details worth reporting. Bacteria and contact irritation remain alternative contributors.

After eating and tooth brushing, rinse gently, dry the lip folds and apply a bland barrier ointment to the external skin. Avoid licking the area and keep reusable dental appliances clean according to dental instructions.

If dentures feel loose, cause sores or seem to alter the mouth crease, arrange a dental fit check rather than adjusting them yourself. A clinician may examine both the skin and oral lining before choosing an antifungal, antibacterial or dermatitis treatment.

Book a medical or dental assessment for persistent or recurring cracks, oral white patches, denture sores, painful swallowing, reduced eating, discharge or spreading crust. Recurrent oral thrush or cheilitis may prompt review of dry mouth, recent antibiotics, inhaled medicines, diabetes or immune health.

Seek urgent care if rapidly increasing mouth or facial swelling, fever with spreading redness, dehydration, or difficulty breathing or swallowing develops.

Ask whether there are signs of thrush or bacterial infection, whether a swab is useful, and whether your dental appliance needs review. Clarify whether prescribed treatment belongs on the external corners, inside the mouth or both, because products for these surfaces are not automatically interchangeable.
