Angular cheilitis and nutritional deficiency

How the structures involved in Cheilitis differ from normal

Short answer

Angular cheilitis can accompany iron or vitamin deficiency, but irritation, saliva, infection and ill-fitting dentures are other possible causes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Cracks at one or both mouth corners cannot identify a deficiency on their own. The pattern, recurrence, diet, medicines and other symptoms help a clinician decide whether examination or blood tests are useful.

How deficiency fits into the picture

Low iron and shortages of certain B vitamins can affect the tissues lining the mouth and may occur alongside angular cheilitis. Clues elsewhere can include unusual tiredness, a sore or smooth tongue, mouth ulcers, pallor, or changes in eating patterns, although these features have several explanations.

Moisture collecting in a skin fold can soften the corners and allow yeast or bacteria to contribute. Lip licking, drooling, dry or sensitive skin, and dentures that alter the mouth crease may therefore matter even when nutrition is adequate.

Practical next steps

Keep the corners gently clean, pat them dry after eating or drinking, and apply a plain fragrance-free barrier such as petroleum jelly. Avoid licking, picking, strongly flavoured lip products and unprescribed steroid creams, which can irritate the area or obscure an infection.

Do not start high-dose iron or vitamin supplements solely because of cracked corners. A clinician can review diet, digestive symptoms, menstrual blood loss, medicines and recurrence, then select testing or treatment. Antifungal or antibacterial treatment may be needed when infection is suspected.

When to seek medical care

Arrange an appointment if the cracks persist despite gentle barrier care, keep returning, spread beyond the corners, or occur with fatigue, tongue soreness, swallowing difficulty, weight change or bowel symptoms. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, pus, fever, severe pain, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Questions for your appointment

You might ask whether the appearance suggests irritation or infection, whether your diet or health history supports blood testing, and which barrier or prescribed medicine is suitable for the lip corners. If you wear dentures, ask whether their fit or cleaning routine could be trapping saliva.

Questions people ask

Does angular cheilitis prove that I lack iron?

No. Iron deficiency is one possible association, but the appearance alone cannot establish it; irritation, saliva, yeast, bacteria and denture-related folds can look similar.

Should I take a multivitamin for cracked mouth corners?

A balanced diet is sensible, but supplements are not a substitute for identifying the cause. Discuss recurrent disease or other deficiency symptoms with a clinician before taking high doses.

Can a cream fix deficiency-related angular cheilitis?

A barrier can protect the damaged skin, but an underlying deficiency requires its own assessment and treatment. Infection may also need a targeted medicine.
