Angular cheilitis at the corner of the mouth

The fold may look red, darker, lighter, soggy, crusted, or raw. Opening wide to eat, speak, or yawn can sting and reopen the split. One-sided disease is possible, but a lesion away from the actual corner is less typical and may have another explanation.

Saliva trapped in the angle weakens the skin barrier. Friction and movement then create a fissure, and yeast or bacteria can contribute within that damaged surface. Licking provides brief relief from tightness but adds more moisture and usually prolongs the cycle.

Drooling, dentures, reduced support around the lips, dry mouth, eczema, and sensitivity to oral-care or cosmetic products can make the corner more vulnerable. Recurrence may justify checking for nutritional or medical contributors rather than repeatedly treating the visible crack alone.

Wash gently, pat dry, and cover the fold with a thin layer of plain fragrance-free ointment. Take smaller bites while the fissure is sore, avoid spicy products that burn, and do not peel crusts. Replace habitual licking with reapplying the protective barrier.

If basic care is insufficient, a clinician can examine the pattern and choose treatment for the likely cause. Antifungal and antibacterial medicines are not interchangeable, while topical steroids can be unsuitable when infection has not been addressed. Dental review may help if an appliance rubs or saliva pools around it.

Make an appointment if the area repeatedly splits, stays inflamed, spreads, or interferes with eating. A sore that is firm, bleeds without being disturbed, forms blisters, or sits beyond the mouth angle should be assessed because it may not be angular cheilitis.

Rapidly worsening swelling, facial redness, pus, fever, or escalating pain warrants prompt care. Seek urgent medical help if swelling affects breathing or swallowing. These warning signs determine urgency; they do not identify the underlying diagnosis by themselves.

Ask whether the location and surface changes fit angular cheilitis, whether infection or dermatitis is suspected, and how long to use each recommended product. Discuss dry mouth, drooling, dental work, dentures, new toiletries, and similar episodes.
