Angioedema of the Eyelids

Loose eyelid tissue can become noticeably puffy when fluid leaks into deeper skin layers. Swelling may affect one eye or both and can accompany lip swelling, facial fullness, hives, or itching. The skin often looks stretched without the crusting or discharge associated with some eye infections.

Food, medicines, stings, infections, and direct exposure to a product around the eyes can precede an episode. Eyelid swelling also has other causes, including contact dermatitis and infection, so pain, heat, marked redness, fever, or eye discharge changes the clinical picture.

Remove contact lenses and avoid eye makeup or newly introduced skin products until the swelling settles and its cause is clearer. Do not rub the lids. A clean, cool compress placed gently over closed eyes can ease discomfort without putting pressure on the eye.

Note the timing, recent foods, medicines, stings, and products used near the face. If a clinician has already given you an angioedema plan, follow it. Antihistamines can help some histamine-driven episodes, but they do not treat every type of angioedema.

Contact emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, trouble swallowing, faintness, or swelling inside the mouth or tongue. Follow instructions for any prescribed emergency medicine while awaiting help.

Arrange urgent assessment for reduced or double vision, severe eye pain, pain when moving the eye, a bulging eye, fever, pronounced redness, or swelling that prevents the eye from opening. These features need examination rather than home care alone.

Discuss whether the appearance suggests angioedema, an allergic skin reaction, or infection. Ask which treatments fit your pattern, which medicines or products to avoid, and whether recurring swelling without hives calls for further evaluation. Bring photos if the swelling has already improved.
