Medicines that can cause angioedema

Short answer
Several medicines can cause angioedema through different pathways, and suspected drug-related swelling needs prompt review rather than unsupervised rechallenge.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Medicines and sudden swelling
Potential culprits include certain blood-pressure medicines, aspirin and related anti-inflammatory pain medicines, antibiotics, and other drugs capable of causing allergic reactions. The correct response depends on the medicine, the reason it was prescribed, and the severity of symptoms.
Different medicines, different pathways
Some reactions release histamine and may include itchy hives, flushing, or wheeze. Certain blood-pressure medicines can increase bradykinin, producing deeper swelling that often lacks hives. Anti-inflammatory pain medicines can shift inflammatory pathways and cause swelling with or without respiratory symptoms.
A reaction may begin soon after a dose or appear after a medicine has been used for a long time. Starting something recently is useful evidence, but it is not the only timing pattern a clinician will consider.
What to do about a suspected medicine
For active swelling, seek medical advice promptly and take the packet or an accurate medicine list. Record the drug name, dose, time taken, symptom onset, hives, breathing symptoms, and any treatment used. Include non-prescription pain, cold, and herbal products.
Do not deliberately take another dose to test the link. If a medicine treats blood pressure, heart disease, seizures, blood clot risk, or another serious condition, get urgent prescribing advice about stopping or replacing it; an unplanned interruption may also be harmful.
Symptoms that cannot wait
Call emergency services for tongue or throat swelling, breathing or swallowing difficulty, a hoarse voice, wheeze, faintness, confusion, or quickly worsening swelling. Follow any prescribed emergency plan while waiting for help.
Facial or lip swelling with normal breathing still warrants prompt assessment, particularly when it is new or progressing. After the episode, make sure the suspected reaction and the agreed alternatives are recorded clearly for future prescribers and pharmacists.
Agree on safe alternatives
Ask which medicine is the leading suspect, whether related drugs should be avoided, and what can replace the treatment. Clarify whether allergy assessment is useful, which symptoms require an emergency response, and how to describe the reaction in future healthcare visits.

Questions people ask
Can a long-term medicine suddenly cause angioedema?
Yes. Some medicine-related forms can begin after uneventful use, so clinicians review long-standing treatments as well as recently started ones.
Does drug-related angioedema always come with hives?
No. Histamine-mediated reactions may include itchy hives, while bradykinin-mediated swelling often occurs without them.
Can I restart the suspected medicine if the swelling settles?
Do not restart it on your own. Re-exposure could cause another reaction, and a prescriber should assess the suspected pathway, treatment need, and possible alternatives.
