What should you know about angina sleep?

Short answer
Angina can occur during rest or sleep, and chest discomfort that wakes you or differs from your usual pattern needs prompt medical attention.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why symptoms may appear at night
Angina reflects a temporary mismatch between the heart muscle's need for oxygen and its blood supply. Symptoms can sometimes develop without exertion, including while lying down or asleep. Pressure, squeezing, heaviness or tightness may be felt in the chest and may extend to an arm, shoulder, jaw, neck, back or upper abdomen.
Nighttime chest discomfort can also accompany reflux, muscle or rib pain, anxiety, or breathing problems. Position, meals, tenderness and breathing may offer clues, yet they cannot safely rule a heart cause in or out. A changed resting pattern is clinically meaningful even when an episode settles.
Responding to a nighttime episode
Sit upright, stop any activity and keep a phone nearby. Follow your prescribed angina instructions if applicable, including only the medicine and dose specified for you. Record the onset, duration, sensation, spread, sleep position and accompanying nausea, sweating, dizziness or breathlessness.
Contact a clinician promptly about a first episode, repeated awakenings or symptoms that now happen with less activity or at rest. A review can examine possible heart and non-heart causes, current medication timing, blood pressure and whether an electrocardiogram or further assessment is needed.
Getting emergency help
Call local emergency services when nighttime chest discomfort is severe, persists, worsens, returns quickly or is unlike your established episodes. Breathlessness, fainting, marked sweating, nausea, confusion, weakness, or pain spreading to the arm, shoulder, jaw or back are additional reasons for immediate help. Do not wait until morning or drive yourself.
Questions to raise at review
Ask whether the timing suggests resting angina, reflux, a breathing issue or another cause; whether your current treatment schedule needs review; which tests may clarify the diagnosis; and what exact symptoms should trigger your emergency plan. Mention snoring, waking breathless and recent changes in exercise tolerance.

Questions people ask
Can lying down cause angina?
Angina may arise at rest, but lying down can also worsen reflux or breathing-related symptoms. The position alone does not establish the cause of chest discomfort.
Should I go back to sleep after chest discomfort stops?
Do not simply return to sleep after a new, severe or changed episode. Seek emergency help for red flags, and obtain prompt clinical advice for a settled first or recurring episode.
Can poor sleep worsen established angina symptoms?
Poor sleep may increase physical stress and can complicate symptom control. Tell your clinician about sleep disruption, waking breathless or snoring so these features can be assessed alongside the chest symptoms.
