Symptoms can be mild, strong, predictable, or unfamiliar, and no single presentation applies to every woman. Chest pressure remains important even when other sensations are more noticeable.

Angina occurs when the heart muscle receives less oxygen-rich blood than it needs. Symptoms may emerge with physical effort, emotional strain, or cold exposure and ease when demand falls. Some women have problems involving the heart's smaller vessels or temporary vessel narrowing, which may produce a less predictable pattern.

Nausea, tiredness, indigestion-like discomfort, or breathlessness may be mistaken for stress or a minor illness. These features do not prove a heart cause, but they merit assessment when they appear with chest discomfort, exertion, cardiovascular risk factors, or a clear change from usual health.

Record what you were doing when symptoms began, how long they lasted, where you felt them, whether they spread, and what made them better or worse. Tell the clinician about high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol problems, smoking, pregnancy-related blood pressure or diabetes, menopause, and family heart history.

Assessment may include an examination, blood tests, an electrocardiogram, and further heart testing chosen for the symptom pattern. If angina is diagnosed, take medicines as prescribed and confirm a written plan for managing another episode.

Call emergency services for new, severe, or persistent chest pressure, squeezing, heaviness, or tightness, including symptoms at rest. Act urgently when chest discomfort occurs with shortness of breath, cold sweating, nausea, faintness, or pain spreading to the jaw, arm, shoulder, back, or upper abdomen.

Do not wait for symptoms to become dramatic and do not drive yourself. If you already have an angina action plan, follow its medicine instructions while emergency help is being arranged.
