Mastectomy removes most breast tissue. It may be recommended to treat breast cancer, or considered before cancer develops when inherited or other risk is particularly high. Those situations have different goals and should not be confused.

Preventive surgery lowers risk substantially without making it zero, because microscopic breast tissue can remain. Choices may include preserving some skin or the nipple, going flat, or creating a breast shape with an implant or the person's own tissue. Sensation is commonly altered even when the outer appearance is preserved.

Bring information about cancers on both sides of your family, including the cancer type and age at diagnosis, to a risk clinic or breast specialist. If testing is proposed, genetic counselling should cover possible results, limitations, privacy concerns, and implications for relatives.

Consider recovery time, caregiving responsibilities, future pregnancy plans, body image, intimacy, and reconstruction preferences. Emergency assessment is needed for trouble breathing, chest pain, collapse, uncontrolled bleeding, or sudden severe swelling. Persistent swelling, tightness, or aching in the arm, hand, breast, or chest wall should be reported for evaluation of lymphatic problems.
