Blood Tests for Androgenic Alopecia

The condition, also called androgenetic alopecia or pattern hair loss, typically develops gradually. A clinician examines the distribution of thinning, the scalp and hair shafts before deciding whether laboratory checks would add useful information.

Blood tests are more useful when shedding is sudden or widespread, the pattern is unusual, or symptoms suggest a second cause. Depending on the history, a clinician may check a blood count, iron stores or thyroid function.

Hormone testing is selective rather than routine. It may be considered when patterned thinning occurs alongside irregular periods, increased facial or body hair, acne or other signs of androgen excess. Results are interpreted with medicines, diet, recent illness and menstrual history.

Note when thinning began, whether it is shedding or gradual miniaturisation, and which relatives have similar hair loss. Take clear photographs under consistent lighting and list medicines, supplements, recent illness, dietary restriction and major physical stressors.

Do not start iron or hormone supplements simply because hair is thinning. Excess supplementation can cause harm and may obscure the clinical picture. Ask what each proposed test is looking for and how an abnormal result would change management.

Arrange a prompt appointment for rapidly progressing loss, smooth bald patches, scalp pain, heavy scaling, pus, scarring, eyebrow loss or hair breakage. These features can point away from straightforward pattern hair loss and may need targeted treatment.

Seek urgent care if hair loss begins with facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a severe widespread rash after a medicine, or if it accompanies marked weakness, fainting or ongoing heavy bleeding.
