What should you know about anaphylaxis throat swelling?

A tight or closing sensation, difficulty swallowing, a hoarse or changed voice, noisy breathing, tongue swelling and trouble getting air are emergency warning signs. Do not wait for hives, and do not wait to see whether the swelling settles on its own.

During anaphylaxis, chemical mediators can make tissues in the tongue and throat swell. The narrowed space can change the voice, make swallowing difficult and produce harsh or noisy breathing. Breathing may become harder as swelling progresses.

Anaphylaxis can also cause wheezing lower in the airways and a fall in blood pressure, leading to dizziness, confusion or collapse. Visible lip or facial swelling may accompany throat symptoms, but its absence does not make airway symptoms less urgent.

Administer the person's prescribed adrenaline auto-injector as soon as throat swelling suggests anaphylaxis, and call UAE emergency services. A person with severe breathing difficulty may sit upright with support, but should not stand or walk. Otherwise, keep them flat with raised legs; position a pregnant person on the left side. Remove food from the mouth if easily reached, but do not offer drinks or tablets when swallowing is difficult and do not put fingers blindly into the throat.

Treat sudden throat tightness, tongue swelling, voice change, drooling, difficulty swallowing, persistent cough, noisy breathing or inability to speak comfortably as an emergency after a possible allergen exposure. Blue-grey lips, confusion, extreme drowsiness or collapse indicate critical breathing or circulation problems.

If the person becomes unresponsive and is not breathing normally, start cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use an automated external defibrillator if available. Hospital assessment remains necessary even when adrenaline brings rapid relief, because airway symptoms can return.

After recovery, ask whether the likely trigger was a food, medicine, sting or another exposure and whether specialist allergy testing is suitable. Review the exact point at which to use adrenaline, correct injector technique, storage and expiry checks, and how household members or coworkers should follow the emergency plan.
