What should you know about anaphylaxis skin rash?

Skin symptoms become especially concerning when they occur with breathing trouble, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, vomiting or collapse. Anaphylaxis can progress quickly, so do not wait for every possible symptom to appear before acting.

Hives are raised, itchy welts that may change shape or move between areas. Flushing can make the skin look red or feel warm, while deeper swelling may affect the eyelids, lips or face. These changes reflect chemicals released during an allergic reaction.

Anaphylaxis commonly involves more than one body system, although severe airway or circulation symptoms can occur without visible skin changes. A rash alone can have many causes; its urgency depends on accompanying symptoms and how rapidly the illness is developing.

If anaphylaxis is suspected, use the person's prescribed adrenaline auto-injector immediately and call UAE emergency services. Follow the device instructions, note when it was given, and use another prescribed device if the emergency plan instructs you to and symptoms continue or return.

Keep the person lying flat with legs raised if possible. If breathing is difficult, allow a supported sitting position; if pregnant, lying on the left side is preferred. Do not let them stand or walk, and do not rely on an antihistamine to treat breathing or circulation problems.

Call emergency services at once for difficult or noisy breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, a hoarse voice, persistent coughing, dizziness, confusion, collapse, or pale and clammy skin. Sudden widespread hives after a likely allergen also deserve close attention, particularly when symptoms are changing quickly.

Emergency assessment is still needed after adrenaline improves symptoms because the reaction can return. A person who becomes unresponsive and is not breathing normally needs cardiopulmonary resuscitation while emergency help is on the way.

Ask what trigger is suspected, whether allergy testing is appropriate, how to avoid the trigger, and how many adrenaline devices should be available. Request a written emergency plan and hands-on confirmation that you and close contacts can use the prescribed injector correctly.
