Anaphylaxis rash treatment: what to do

If an adrenaline auto-injector is available, use it promptly according to its instructions, then call local emergency services. Antihistamines may ease hives or itching, but they do not replace adrenaline or treat dangerous breathing or circulation problems.

Anaphylaxis may present with raised itchy welts, flushing, or swelling, together with problems elsewhere in the body. Warning features include throat tightness, a hoarse voice, wheezing, difficult breathing, dizziness, collapse, or repeated vomiting after a likely allergen exposure. A severe reaction can also occur without a visible rash.

Skin creams do not stop anaphylaxis because the reaction is not confined to the skin. Even if the rash begins to fade, breathing or circulation symptoms still require emergency treatment.

Use the auto-injector in the outer thigh, through clothing if necessary. Call emergency services and state that anaphylaxis is suspected. Keep the person lying down with their legs raised if possible; if breathing is difficult, they may sit with legs extended. A pregnant person should lie on their left side. Do not let the person stand or walk suddenly.

If symptoms do not improve and another prescribed auto-injector is available, follow the person’s emergency action plan and device instructions. If they become unresponsive and are not breathing normally, begin CPR if you know how and follow the emergency call handler’s directions.

Call emergency services immediately when a sudden rash or swelling occurs with breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, collapse, or symptoms affecting more than one body system after possible allergen exposure. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or short of breath.

Hospital assessment is still needed after adrenaline works because symptoms can return and further monitoring or treatment may be required. Bring the used injector and, if known, details of the suspected trigger.

Ask what may have triggered the reaction, whether allergy testing is appropriate, how many auto-injectors to carry, where to store them in the UAE climate, and how to recognise their expiry date. Request a written emergency action plan and practical training for you, family members, school staff, or colleagues who may need to help.
