Lip swelling and anaphylaxis

Lip swelling is a form of angioedema, meaning fluid has collected in deeper skin tissue. Anaphylaxis may include lip swelling together with tongue or throat swelling, hoarse voice, trouble swallowing, wheezing, breathlessness, hives, vomiting, faintness, or collapse. Isolated lip swelling has several possible causes and does not by itself establish anaphylaxis. What matters urgently is whether swelling is progressing or airway, breathing, circulation, or multiple body systems are affected.

If signs suggest anaphylaxis, use an adrenaline auto-injector without delay if one is available and call UAE emergency services. Do not wait for an antihistamine to work, because it cannot treat dangerous airway swelling or circulatory collapse. Keep the person lying down unless breathing is easier while seated with legs extended, and do not allow walking. For mild, isolated swelling with normal breathing and no other symptoms, seek prompt clinical advice and monitor closely for change.

Emergency help is needed for tongue or throat swelling, a tight throat, voice change, noisy breathing, difficulty breathing or swallowing, faintness, confusion, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms. A reaction involving lip swelling plus breathing difficulty, vomiting, widespread hives, or dizziness also warrants emergency action. Hospital assessment remains necessary after adrenaline, even when the swelling begins to settle.

Tell your clinician what you ate, touched, inhaled, or took before the swelling, how quickly it appeared, and which other symptoms occurred. Ask whether a medicine or food could be responsible, whether targeted allergy testing is suitable, and whether you need auto-injectors and a personalised emergency plan.
