What should you know about anaphylactic urticaria?

Urticaria causes raised, itchy welts that may change shape, fade in one place, and emerge elsewhere. Anaphylaxis can present with hives together with tongue or throat swelling, wheezing, breathing difficulty, vomiting, dizziness, faintness, or collapse. Skin findings can be absent in a severe reaction, so their absence does not make breathing or circulation symptoms safe.

Many episodes of hives remain limited to the skin. The need for emergency action comes from rapid progression and signs involving the airway, breathing, circulation, or several body systems, not from the size or appearance of an individual welt.

If hives occur with throat tightness, breathing trouble, faintness, or collapse, use the person's prescribed adrenaline auto-injector and call emergency services in the UAE. Keep the person lying down, or supported sitting if breathing is difficult, and prevent walking or sudden standing. Follow the personal emergency plan if symptoms persist or return.

For hives without emergency features, avoid a suspected trigger and seek clinical advice if the eruption is extensive, keeps returning, or follows a new medicine. An oral antihistamine may be advised for skin symptoms, but it cannot replace adrenaline when anaphylaxis is suspected.

Treat noisy or difficult breathing, a hoarse voice, trouble swallowing, tongue swelling, blue or pale skin, confusion, fainting, or collapse as an emergency. A fast-moving reaction after food, medicine, an insect sting, or another likely allergen also warrants immediate help when symptoms extend beyond the skin.

Arrange non-emergency assessment when hives repeatedly appear without a clear trigger, leave bruising, remain fixed in the same spots, or occur with fever or joint pain. Those features may call for evaluation beyond ordinary short-lived urticaria.

Bring photographs, a timeline of foods and medicines, details of insect exposure, and the names of treatments used. Ask whether allergy assessment is appropriate, whether you need adrenaline auto-injectors, how to recognize escalation, and which antihistamine plan is suitable for isolated hives.
