Gait cycle analysis: what it shows and how to prepare

Short answer

Gait cycle analysis examines how your body moves and bears weight while walking or running to identify meaningful movement patterns.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Assessment focus
Timing, alignment, loading, balance, and coordination during walking or running.
Possible tools
Clinical observation, video, motion capture, and pressure measurement.
Interpretation
Measurements are considered with symptoms, examination findings, footwear, and personal goals.

The short answer

A clinician interprets these observations alongside your symptoms, strength, joint movement, footwear, health history, and goals. The test is an assessment tool rather than a diagnosis on its own.

What the assessment examines

The gait cycle runs from one foot contacting the ground until that same foot contacts it again. During that sequence, the body alternates between supporting weight and moving the leg forward. The examiner may compare step timing, stride pattern, foot placement, balance, joint angles, trunk motion, and left-to-right differences.

Video, motion capture, or a pressure plate can reveal details that are difficult to see at normal speed. A pressure scanner maps where and when force passes beneath the feet, while motion capture tracks movement through space. Results still need clinical interpretation because natural variation is common.

How to prepare and use the results

Bring the shoes, braces, walking aid, or orthotics you normally use, plus any footwear linked to your symptoms. Wear clothing that allows the clinician to observe the hips, knees, ankles, and trunk. Explain when discomfort starts, which surfaces or speeds provoke it, and whether fatigue changes your movement.

Findings may guide exercises for strength, mobility, balance, or movement control. They may also inform footwear advice, running-load changes, walking-aid adjustment, or consideration of custom orthotics. A useful plan links each proposed change to a symptom or functional goal and includes a way to reassess progress.

When not to wait for routine gait testing

Seek urgent medical assessment for a sudden inability to walk, new weakness on one side, new loss of coordination, a cold or pale foot, major swelling after injury, severe pain with an obvious deformity, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These symptoms call for medical evaluation before a routine movement analysis.

Book a clinical review when repeated falls, progressive limping, persistent pain, numbness, or declining walking tolerance is affecting daily life. Gait analysis may then form part of a broader neurological or musculoskeletal examination.

Questions to ask about your findings

Ask which measurements differ from your usual pattern, whether those differences plausibly relate to your symptoms, and which finding changes the treatment plan. Request a clear explanation of the goal, expected functional change, and reassessment method for every recommended exercise, device, or footwear adjustment.

Questions people ask

Is gait analysis only for runners?

No. It can help assess walking difficulty, limping, balance concerns, pain during movement, use of an aid, or return to sport.

Does an unusual gait measurement prove there is an injury?

No. Movement varies between people, and a difference may be harmless. Its relevance depends on symptoms, examination findings, and whether it changes function.

Should I bring my usual shoes?

Yes. Bring footwear and any orthotics, brace, or walking aid you regularly use so the clinician can assess their effect on your movement.
