Amyloidosis and heart failure

Treatment depends on the type of amyloid protein, the extent of heart involvement and other organs affected. Care may combine treatment aimed at the underlying amyloidosis with careful control of fluid build-up and heart-related symptoms.

Deposits within the heart wall can reduce its flexibility, so pressure rises as the chambers fill. Cardiac amyloidosis commonly presents with breathlessness, fatigue, ankle or leg swelling and reduced exercise tolerance. It can also affect the electrical system, contributing to an irregular rhythm, palpitations, dizziness or fainting. These symptoms have many possible causes and require clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Keep appointments with the specialist teams coordinating heart and amyloidosis care. Take prescribed medicines exactly as directed, because medicines commonly used for other forms of heart failure may need adjustment in cardiac amyloidosis. Track changes in breathlessness, swelling, dizziness and ability to manage usual activity. Discuss salt and fluid guidance with your team rather than making major restrictions independently.

Seek emergency help for severe or sudden breathlessness, chest pressure, collapse, new confusion, or fainting with ongoing weakness. A rapid worsening of swelling, breathlessness at rest, palpitations with dizziness, or a marked fall in usual activity needs prompt medical advice. Escalation is based on these warning signs, regardless of how recently the condition was diagnosed.

Ask which type of amyloidosis has been identified, how heart involvement is being monitored, what each medicine is intended to do, and which side effects warrant a call. Clarify whom to contact if symptoms change and whether family assessment is relevant for the specific amyloidosis type.
