Why amniocentesis may be offered

It may be discussed after a screening result, an ultrasound finding, a previous affected pregnancy or a known condition in the family. The exact laboratory analysis is chosen for the clinical question; the test does not automatically check for every possible health or developmental condition.

Screening tests estimate whether a pregnancy has a higher or lower chance of particular conditions. Amniocentesis obtains fetal cells from amniotic fluid, allowing diagnostic laboratory analysis for the conditions requested. A result can therefore give a more definite answer about those targets, while findings outside the test's scope may remain unknown. Your clinician should name the analysis being ordered and explain what a normal, uncertain or affected result would mean.

Before deciding, identify what information matters to you and how you might use the result during pregnancy or after birth. Review the procedure and its possible complications, the conditions included, result timing and alternatives such as another screening test or chorionic villus sampling. Genetic counselling can help you consider uncertain findings and personal values without directing your choice.

After amniocentesis, seek prompt maternity advice for vaginal fluid loss, bleeding beyond light spotting, fever, chills, contractions, increasing abdominal pain or feeling significantly unwell. A concerning change in movements also warrants contact once you are at a stage where movements are familiar. Use the urgent contact route supplied by the clinic rather than waiting for test results.

Request the names of the conditions included in the analysis and ask whether the sample could produce an uncertain result.
