It may be discussed after a later ultrasound finding, when earlier testing was not undertaken, or when the maternity team needs laboratory information relevant to delivery and newborn care. The reason, likely benefit and available alternatives should be considered individually.

Cells within amniotic fluid can be used for selected chromosome or genetic analyses. Fluid may also be examined for other clinical questions when indicated. The laboratory does not automatically test for every possible condition; clinicians choose analyses that fit the ultrasound findings, family history and purpose of testing.

A result obtained late in pregnancy may help the team choose the place of birth, arrange the appropriate neonatal specialists or prepare for confirmatory testing after delivery. A normal result only addresses the conditions included in the requested analysis.

Ask the fetal medicine specialist to identify the exact question the sample is intended to answer and whether the result is expected before birth. Discuss what care would change for each possible result, including an uncertain finding, and whether testing after birth could provide the same information.

Share any contractions, bleeding, suspected fluid leakage, infection symptoms, medicines and blood-group information before the procedure. The team may alter the plan if there are signs of labour or another pregnancy complication.

Call your maternity unit without delay for vaginal fluid leakage, vaginal bleeding, fever, chills, escalating abdominal pain, contractions or reduced fetal movement. These symptoms require assessment based on the symptom itself, not on whether a complication is thought to be common. Seek emergency assistance for heavy bleeding, severe pain or any instruction from your maternity team to attend urgently.

Clarify which tests will run, the expected reporting sequence, who will interpret the findings and whether genetic counselling is available. Ask how the procedure date relates to possible delivery timing and where to go if labour-like symptoms begin afterward.
