What happens during amniocentesis

The appointment includes ultrasound assessment, skin preparation, sample collection, and checks afterward. The procedure offers diagnostic information but carries limitations and a small chance of complications that should be discussed before consent.

Ultrasound first shows the baby's position, the placenta, and suitable pockets of fluid. After cleaning the abdomen, the clinician watches the ultrasound while passing the needle into the amniotic sac and drawing fluid into a syringe.

You may notice a sting, pressure, or cramp. The team then removes the needle, checks the pregnancy as appropriate, labels the sample, and sends it for the agreed analysis. Occasionally, sampling may be postponed or another attempt discussed if there is no safe route or the sample is insufficient.

Bring relevant records and tell the team about medicines, allergies, blood-group information, bleeding concerns, infections, and current pregnancy symptoms. Use the clinic's instructions for food, drink, bladder preparation, medicines, transport, and activity rather than relying on general advice.

Before leaving, confirm what was tested, how results will be communicated, whom to call out of hours, and whether you need any treatment related to your blood group. Plan a quieter period afterward if advised and monitor how you feel.

Report vaginal bleeding, clear fluid leaking from the vagina, fever, chills, persistent or worsening abdominal pain, regular contractions, or feeling notably unwell. Seek urgent assessment if bleeding is heavy, pain is severe, you faint, breathing becomes difficult, or your condition worsens quickly.

Ask what information the proposed laboratory test could provide, how the procedure's risks apply to your pregnancy, who performs it, what discomfort relief is available, how uncertain findings are handled, and what support follows the result.
