What can an amnio detect?

During amniocentesis, a clinician uses ultrasound guidance to remove a small sample of amniotic fluid with a needle. The laboratory may examine fetal cells for chromosome differences or a particular inherited condition. The fluid can also be tested for substances linked with an open neural tube defect when that information is needed. The exact analysis depends on why the procedure was offered; there is no single panel that identifies every possible condition.

A diagnostic result is different from a screening result. It may confirm or rule out the conditions actually tested, while an unclear finding may need interpretation by a fetal medicine specialist or genetic counsellor. Even a clear genetic result does not describe every aspect of development or future health.

Before deciding, ask which condition or laboratory analysis is proposed, what a positive, negative or uncertain result could mean, and whether the answer would change pregnancy care. Tell the maternity team about blood-thinning medicines, bleeding problems, allergies and your blood group if known. Follow the clinic's instructions about eating, drinking and bladder filling because these can vary with the stage of pregnancy and local practice.

Consider how you would like results communicated and whether you want a support person present. Screening options such as NIPT do not provide the same type of diagnostic answer, so compare their purpose rather than treating them as interchangeable tests.

Seek prompt maternity advice after the procedure if you have fluid leaking from the vagina, vaginal bleeding, fever, chills, worsening or persistent abdominal pain, regular contractions, or reduced fetal movement once you normally feel movement. Heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting or feeling acutely unwell warrants urgent assessment. Mild brief cramping can occur, but symptoms that intensify or do not settle should be checked.

Ask what prompted the offer of amniocentesis, precisely which conditions the laboratory will analyse, whether parental samples might be needed and who will explain an uncertain result. It is also useful to discuss when results are expected, what follow-up may be offered, and whom to call if symptoms develop outside clinic hours.
