Amniocentesis or CVS: How Are They Different?

Amniocentesis samples amniotic fluid through the abdomen, while chorionic villus sampling takes placental tissue through the abdomen or cervix. The preferred option depends on pregnancy stage, the condition being investigated, ultrasound findings, laboratory plans and your preferences.

CVS can generally be performed earlier in pregnancy than amniocentesis, which may allow earlier diagnostic information. Because CVS examines placental cells, an unusual result can occasionally reflect the placenta rather than the fetus; in that situation, amniocentesis may be suggested for clarification.

Both samples can support chromosome testing and targeted testing for certain inherited conditions. Amniotic fluid can also answer some questions that require fluid markers. Neither procedure automatically tests for every condition, so the requested laboratory analysis is as important as the sampling method.

Start with the clinical question: what finding or family history prompted diagnostic testing, and which laboratory analysis can address it? Ask whether both procedures are currently available to you, whether the sample type affects interpretation, and when meaningful results could be returned.

Discuss how each procedure is performed, possible complications and what follow-up would occur after an inconclusive or placental-only finding. Your comfort with timing, uncertainty and the procedure route may shape the choice. A fetal medicine clinician or genetic counsellor can help connect these preferences to the technical details.

After either procedure, follow the care team's instructions and contact them urgently for vaginal bleeding, fever, chills, worsening abdominal pain, regular contractions or fluid leaking from the vagina. Seek immediate medical help if you become severely unwell, feel faint or cannot access your maternity team.

Ask which procedure fits your pregnancy stage, whether placental mosaicism could complicate a CVS result, and whether amniotic fluid offers information needed for your specific concern. Confirm what tests the laboratory will perform, when results may arrive and what each possible outcome would change.
