Ammonia-Like Body Odour: What to Know

Short answer

An ammonia-like body odour can reflect concentrated sweat, diet or strenuous exercise, but persistent change deserves medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Where the smell may come from

Sweat itself has little smell. Odour develops as skin bacteria break down substances in sweat, especially in warm, enclosed areas such as the underarms and feet. A sharp ammonia-like note may be more noticeable with heavy exercise, dehydration, fasting or a diet high in protein, when the body handles nitrogen-containing compounds differently.

First identify whether the smell comes from sweat, urine, breath or clothing, because each points toward a different assessment. A new persistent odour can also accompany medication effects, infection or problems involving metabolism, the liver or kidneys. Smell alone cannot determine the cause.

Practical steps

Wash sweat-prone skin gently and dry it well, change damp clothing promptly, and choose breathable fabrics and clean footwear. Drink regularly enough that your urine is generally pale unless a clinician has placed you on fluid restriction. Note whether the smell follows a particular food, supplement, medicine, exercise pattern or period of fasting; do not stop prescribed medicine without advice.

An antiperspirant reduces sweat, whereas a deodorant mainly masks or alters odour. If ordinary antiperspirant does not control heavy underarm sweating, a clinician can discuss prescription options and check for skin irritation or excessive sweating that may need targeted treatment.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical appointment if the smell is new, persistent despite washing and clothing changes, or accompanied by marked sweating, thirst, frequent urination, weight change, nausea, poor appetite or unusual tiredness. Seek urgent care if ammonia-like breath occurs with confusion, severe vomiting, difficulty breathing, very little urine, swelling or yellowing of the skin or eyes. These accompanying features, rather than the odour alone, determine urgency.

Questions for your doctor

Tell the clinician when the change began, where it seems to originate, what triggers it and whether anyone else notices it. Ask whether your medicines, supplements, eating pattern or sweating could contribute, and which examination or tests are appropriate for your other symptoms.

Questions people ask

Can dehydration make sweat smell like ammonia?

Concentrated sweat and urine can make sharp odours more noticeable. Rehydration may help when fluid loss is the cause, but follow any medical fluid restriction you have.

Can eating a lot of protein affect body odour?

A high-protein or very low-carbohydrate eating pattern may alter the compounds released in sweat or breath. Persistent odour still merits review, particularly when other symptoms are present.

Will deodorant treat an ammonia smell?

Deodorant may reduce the perceived smell but does not address an internal cause or heavy sweating. Ongoing unexplained change should be assessed rather than repeatedly covered with fragrance.
