AmLactin for Keratosis Pilaris: What to Know

Keratosis pilaris develops when keratin collects at hair-follicle openings, creating small, rough bumps that often appear on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks or buttocks. AmLactin products contain ammonium lactate, a moisturising ingredient derived from lactic acid. It attracts water to dry skin while helping shed compacted surface cells. This can make the area feel softer and look less rough, although redness and bumps may remain.

The product strength and instructions vary, so read the label on the container you have. Lactic-acid products can sting or irritate sensitive, cracked, recently shaved or freshly treated skin.

Test a small area first and apply the product according to its label. Spread a thin layer without vigorous scrubbing, and wash your hands afterwards unless they are being treated. If dryness or tingling develops, use it less often or pause it and choose a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin settles. Do not layer it immediately with abrasive scrubs, strong exfoliating acids or a topical retinoid unless a clinician has planned the combination.

Keep treated skin protected from strong sun with clothing and suitable broad-spectrum sunscreen, because exfoliating acids may increase sun sensitivity. Consistent, gentle care matters more than hard rubbing or picking, which can inflame follicles and leave darker marks.

Stop using the product and seek prompt advice if you develop marked swelling, blistering, severe burning, widespread hives or trouble breathing. Arrange a routine dermatology assessment if the bumps are painful, produce pus, spread rapidly, leave significant discoloration or do not resemble your usual keratosis pilaris. These features can point to irritation or another follicular condition that needs a different approach.
