Lung cancer is not one single illness. The cell type, molecular features, location and spread influence treatment. Assessment may involve chest imaging, sampling tissue or fluid, and tests that show whether cancer is present elsewhere.

Depending on those findings, care can include removing part of a lung, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted medicines or symptom-focused care. Genomic tumour profiling may identify changes that help the oncology team decide whether a particular medicine is relevant.

Write down when a cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort or voice change began and whether it is worsening. Take your medication list, previous scan reports and information about tobacco or workplace exposures. Mention practical concerns such as transport, nutrition, sleep and help at home.

After a diagnosis, request the exact cancer type and stage in plain language. Clarify the goal of the proposed treatment, how response will be checked and how side effects will be managed. Palliative care can support symptoms and quality of life alongside cancer-directed treatment; it is not limited to the final days of life.

Book a clinical review for a persistent or changing cough, repeated chest infections, coughing blood, unexplained weight loss, breathlessness, chest pain or a hoarse voice that does not settle. Lung cancer can present with these symptoms, but other lung and airway conditions can also cause them.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, heavy coughing of blood, blue or grey lips, collapse, sudden confusion or new weakness on one side. If you are receiving treatment, use the urgent contact instructions provided by your team for fever or a rapid decline.

Consider asking: What type and stage of lung cancer do I have? Is further tissue testing needed? What is the purpose of treatment? Could surgery or radiotherapy be suitable? Which side effects require an immediate call? What support is available for breathing, pain, appetite and stopping tobacco use?
