Amelanotic melanoma treatment: what to expect

Because these melanomas contain little or no visible pigment, diagnosis may be delayed until a pink, red, skin-coloured or changing lesion is biopsied. Colour does not determine the treatment plan; the pathology report and extent of disease do.

The clinician reviews the melanoma's thickness, ulceration, location and whether it has reached nearby lymph nodes or other organs. A wider surgical removal may be recommended after the diagnostic biopsy to clear tissue around the site. Sentinel lymph node biopsy may be discussed for melanomas with features that raise concern for lymph-node spread.

If melanoma cannot be managed by surgery alone, the oncology team may consider medicines such as immunotherapy. Treatment is individualised to the tumour findings, the person's general health and previous care. Follow-up skin and lymph-node examinations remain part of care after initial treatment.

Keep the biopsy report, imaging reports and an up-to-date medicine list together. Before the appointment, note when the lesion first appeared, how it changed and whether it bled, crusted or failed to heal. Do not apply corrosive products or attempt to remove the area yourself, because this can injure the skin and complicate assessment.

After surgery, follow the wound-care instructions and protect the dressing as advised. Contact the treating team if you are unsure when to resume exercise, bathing or medicines that affect bleeding. Attend planned surveillance even when the scar looks settled, since follow-up also checks the rest of the skin and regional lymph nodes.

Arrange prompt assessment for a new or changing pink, red or skin-coloured growth, especially one that enlarges, bleeds repeatedly, crusts or does not heal. If melanoma has already been diagnosed, report a new lump near the site, unexplained persistent symptoms or a rapidly changing lesion rather than waiting for the next routine visit.

Following an operation, seek urgent advice for heavy bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure, spreading redness, worsening swelling, pus, fever or severe escalating pain. Sudden breathing difficulty, collapse, new weakness or confusion warrants emergency care.

Ask what the pathology report shows about thickness, ulceration and margins; whether further excision or lymph-node assessment is advised; what side effects to watch for; and how the results affect follow-up. It is also useful to clarify who to contact between visits and which new skin or general symptoms should trigger an earlier appointment.
