Amber and cloudy urine: what it may mean

Colour and clarity alone cannot identify the cause. Consider how long the change lasts and whether it occurs with pain, fever, urinary urgency, vomiting, or reduced urine output.

Deep amber urine often appears when urine is concentrated, including after sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or drinking less fluid. Some foods, vitamins, and medicines can also alter colour. Cloudiness can result from crystals, mucus, vaginal discharge, semen, blood, or white blood cells in the sample. A urinary tract infection can present with cloudy urine together with burning, frequent urges, or lower abdominal discomfort. A kidney infection can present with urinary symptoms plus fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the back or side.

If you have no fluid restriction, drink regularly and see whether the amber colour becomes lighter. Check whether a new medicine, supplement, food, menstrual bleeding, or discharge could have affected the appearance. Use a clean container if a clinician asks for a urine sample, because contamination can make urine look cloudy. Arrange a medical assessment when the change persists, returns, or accompanies burning, urgency, unusual odour, pelvic discomfort, or visible blood. A urine test can help distinguish infection, blood, crystals, and contamination.

Seek urgent medical care for cloudy or dark urine with fever and shaking chills, severe pain in the back or side, repeated vomiting, confusion, inability to pass urine, or very little urine. Visible blood, cola-coloured urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or symptoms during pregnancy also warrant prompt assessment. If you feel faint, severely unwell, or unable to keep fluids down, use an urgent care service rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest dehydration, urinary infection, kidney involvement, or another source of pigment or sediment. Useful questions include whether you need urine testing, whether any medicine or supplement may be contributing, and which changes should trigger urgent reassessment. Mention recent illness, fluid losses, urinary pain, fever, pregnancy, and any blood you have noticed.
