Short answer

For oily skin, use a gentle cleanser, light moisturiser and daytime sunscreen, then cleanse and apply suitable treatment at night.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Morning essentials
Gentle cleanse, light moisturiser and broad-spectrum sunscreen
Evening focus
Cleanse, use one targeted active, then moisturise
Avoid
Harsh scrubs, repeated washing and several new actives at once

A simple daily routine

Choose non-comedogenic products and introduce active ingredients separately. Excess scrubbing, harsh soap and skipping moisturiser can irritate the barrier, which may leave skin tight without reliably controlling shine.

Why skin becomes oily

Oiliness reflects sebum produced by the skin's sebaceous glands. It may vary with hormones, climate, stress and the products touching your face. Oily skin can occur without disease, although acne may present with oily skin, clogged pores and inflamed spots. Seborrheic dermatitis may present with greasy scale, redness or itch, especially around the scalp, eyebrows and sides of the nose.

What to use morning and evening

In the morning, wash with a mild gel or foaming cleanser, apply a lightweight fragrance-free moisturiser if needed, and finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen suited to oily skin. At night, remove sunscreen and makeup, cleanse gently, then use one targeted product chosen for your concern before moisturising. Salicylic acid can help clear oil from pores; a topical retinoid may help comedonal acne but can irritate and needs pregnancy-related guidance. Avoid starting both together.

Patch-test unfamiliar products, begin active treatment on spaced evenings, and reduce frequency if burning or peeling develops. Blotting paper can lift surface oil during the day without adding another cleansing session. Keep hair products and heavy balms away from acne-prone facial areas.

When to seek dermatology care

Arrange a dermatology assessment for painful deep spots, scarring, persistent rash or oiliness that does not improve with a consistent gentle routine. Seek prompt medical advice if a product causes marked facial swelling, widespread blistering, trouble breathing or eye involvement. Prescription options, including isotretinoin for selected severe acne, require clinical assessment and monitoring rather than self-treatment.

Questions for your dermatologist

Ask whether your pattern fits acne, hormonal acne, seborrheic dermatitis or uncomplicated oily skin; which active ingredient matches it; how often to apply that product; and which signs mean you should pause it. Mention pregnancy, plans for pregnancy, eczema, allergies and every prescription or over-the-counter product already used.

Questions people ask

Should oily skin still be moisturised?

Yes. A light, non-comedogenic moisturiser can support the skin barrier without the heavy feel of an occlusive cream.

How often should I wash an oily face?

A morning and evening cleanse is a practical starting point, with another gentle wash after heavy sweating. Repeated washing may increase irritation.

Can I use salicylic acid and a retinoid together?

Some people can, but using both from the outset can cause dryness and irritation. Introduce one first and seek personalised guidance if your skin is sensitive or acne is persistent.
