Why Are My Palms Always Sweaty?

Short answer

Frequently sweaty palms may be primary focal hyperhidrosis, but medicines, illness, heat, or metabolic and hormonal changes can also contribute.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical focal pattern
Both palms, sometimes with sweating of the soles or underarms
Details worth tracking
Onset, triggers, night symptoms, other affected areas, medicines, and associated symptoms
Treatment options
Hand antiperspirant, iontophoresis, and clinician-delivered botulinum toxin may be considered

The short answer

A pattern that is persistent, difficult to control, or disruptive to writing, gripping objects, work, or social contact deserves assessment. The timing, triggers, other body areas involved, and associated symptoms help narrow the explanation.

Patterns that help explain sweaty palms

Primary focal hyperhidrosis often affects both palms and may also involve the soles or underarms. It can begin without heat or exercise and may intensify with stress. Sweating that starts suddenly, occurs during sleep, affects the whole body, or accompanies a new medicine is more suggestive of another trigger.

Hyperthyroidism can present with increased sweating alongside heat intolerance, tremor, a racing heartbeat, or weight change. Hypoglycaemia can include sweating with shakiness, hunger, confusion, or weakness. These symptom combinations guide assessment; sweaty palms by themselves do not establish either diagnosis.

Steps that may reduce palm sweating

Note when sweating occurs, whether it wakes you, which areas are involved, and any links with meals, caffeine, heat, anxiety, exercise, or medicines. Keep hands dry when practical and follow label directions if using an antiperspirant formulated for the hands; stop if the skin becomes sore or cracked.

If self-care is insufficient, a clinician may discuss iontophoresis, which passes a mild electrical current through water around the hands, or botulinum toxin injections that temporarily reduce nerve signals to sweat glands. Choice depends on skin condition, medical history, treatment burden, expected benefit, and possible adverse effects.

When sweating needs medical attention

Book an assessment for a new or worsening pattern, drenching night sweats, whole-body sweating, unexplained weight change, persistent palpitations, or symptoms beginning after a medication change. Seek urgent help when heavy sweating occurs with confusion, fainting, chest pain, severe breathlessness, or signs of heat illness such as marked weakness, headache, nausea, and dizziness after heat exposure.

Useful questions at an appointment

Ask whether your pattern fits primary focal hyperhidrosis, whether your medicines or accompanying symptoms suggest another cause, and whether any examination or testing is appropriate. Discuss how each treatment would affect hand function, how irritation or temporary weakness would be managed, and what would signal that the plan should change.

Questions people ask

Can anxiety cause sweaty palms?

Stress can activate sweating and make an existing tendency more noticeable. Sweating can also occur without anxiety, so a persistent pattern should not automatically be attributed to emotions.

Is palm sweating the same as hyperhidrosis?

Occasional sweating from heat or exertion is expected. Hyperhidrosis describes sweating that is excessive for the body's cooling needs and can interfere with everyday activities.

Can sweaty palms be treated without injections?

Yes. Depending on suitability, options may include a hand antiperspirant or iontophoresis. A clinician can help compare convenience, skin irritation, contraindications, and likely symptom control.
