Always sneezing with a runny nose: what to consider

A clear pattern around dust, animals, pollen, fragrances, work, or certain rooms is particularly useful. Symptoms that do not settle, remain mainly on one side, or come with significant pain need a clinician's review.

Allergic rhinitis often presents with bouts of sneezing, watery discharge, and itching of the nose, eyes, or roof of the mouth. Persistent exposure to house dust mites or pets can keep that pattern active. By contrast, a common cold, influenza, or COVID-19 may include sore throat, cough, fever, aches, fatigue, or a recent contact with illness.

Sinusitis can present with nasal blockage or discharge together with facial pressure and reduced smell. Strong odours, smoke, temperature shifts, and spicy food may cause non-allergic nasal symptoms. Colour alone does not reliably reveal whether antibiotics are needed.

Track the onset, daily timing, likely exposures, discharge, itching, fever, facial discomfort, and whether symptoms improve away from home or work. Follow current local respiratory-infection advice if you also feel unwell or have had a relevant exposure.

Saline spray can moisten the nose and remove irritants. For a nasal rinse, use sterile or suitably treated water and clean the equipment after use. Reduce smoke, incense, fragrance, and any clear trigger. A pharmacist can check whether an allergy treatment is appropriate and demonstrate nasal-spray direction so medicine stays in the nose rather than running down the throat.

Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, collapse, confusion, or swelling of the mouth or throat. These red flags require action regardless of the suspected cause.

Seek prompt medical advice for swelling around an eye, severe headache with neck stiffness, dehydration, worsening asthma, or marked facial pain with fever. Arrange a standard appointment for persistent symptoms, recurrent nosebleeds, loss of smell that does not recover, or discharge and blockage that stay on one side.

Ask which features favour allergy, infection, sinus inflammation, or irritation; whether examination or allergy testing would alter treatment; and how long to try the recommended approach. Share any asthma, eczema, immune problem, pregnancy, recent travel, work exposure, or medicine that could affect treatment choices.
