What should you know about alter gravity treadmill?

Short answer
An AlterG-style anti-gravity treadmill uses an air-filled chamber around the lower body to reduce the load carried through the legs. This can let a person practise walking with less impact or discomfort while strength, balance, and confidence are rebuilt. It is a rehabilitation tool, not a diagnosis or a substitute for clinical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main feature
- An air chamber changes the load carried through the legs.
- Supervision
- A trained rehabilitation professional adjusts the session.
What happens during a session
You usually wear close-fitting shorts that seal to the treadmill chamber. The therapist adjusts the support level, observes your walking pattern, and changes speed or loading as your response allows. Reduced loading can make movement easier, but it does not remove all joint or muscle work, and it may not suit every injury, wound, or medical condition.
Preparing for treatment
Bring information about your operation or injury, pain changes, swelling, dizziness, skin problems, and any walking restrictions. Wear suitable clothing and tell the therapist if the seal feels uncomfortable or if you feel pressure, numbness, breathlessness, or unusual fatigue. Keep using prescribed exercises and aids unless your rehabilitation team changes the plan.
When to seek care
Stop and tell the therapist about chest discomfort, severe breathlessness, faintness, new weakness, sudden severe pain, or a change in sensation. Seek prompt review for increasing wound drainage, marked swelling, or calf pain after surgery. The appropriate response depends on your procedure, circulation, and rehabilitation instructions.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what loading level and walking pattern are suitable, whether the treadmill fits your restrictions, how progress will be measured, and when ordinary ground walking should be added.

Questions people ask
Is an anti-gravity treadmill only for athletes?
No. It may be considered for different rehabilitation goals when a clinician thinks graded walking is suitable.
Does reduced loading mean I can ignore my restrictions?
No. Surgical and injury precautions still apply, even when the treadmill feels easier.
