Use the reference interval printed beside your result rather than a range found elsewhere. The result is best understood with your symptoms, medicines, alcohol intake, health history, other liver-related blood results and any earlier ALT measurements.

Alanine aminotransferase, shortened to ALT, is an enzyme found mainly in liver cells. More ALT can enter the bloodstream when those cells are irritated or injured. The test can signal liver-cell stress, but it does not identify a cause by itself or directly measure how well the liver is functioning.

A borderline result can be temporary. Recent strenuous exercise, alcohol, metabolic liver changes, a viral illness, medicines or supplements may influence ALT. Interpretation also considers enzymes such as AST and ALP, bilirubin and markers of liver function rather than treating ALT as an isolated answer.

Review the report for its reference range and whether any companion tests are flagged. Arrange a routine discussion with the clinician who requested it, particularly if the value has risen from your baseline or other results are abnormal. They may review alcohol use, weight-related metabolic risks, recent illness and prescribed, over-the-counter or herbal products.
