It is an immune-related condition that typically produces smooth patches without visible scarring. Hair texture does not cause it, but tightly styled hair, chemical processing and some scalp disorders can create separate patterns of loss that a clinician should distinguish.

A dermatologist examines whether follicle openings remain visible, where thinning began, and whether the scalp has scale, redness, tenderness or a shiny surface. Alopecia areata commonly presents with sharply defined bald patches and may also affect eyebrows, eyelashes or nails.

Loss around the hairline after repeated pulling suggests traction alopecia, while pain, burning or central scalp thinning can point toward a scarring process. These conditions can coexist, so the shape of a patch alone does not settle the diagnosis.

Arrange a scalp assessment before repeatedly changing products or applying strong home remedies. Note when each area appeared, take well-lit photographs, and mention eyebrow, eyelash or nail changes. Until the cause is clear, reduce tension from braids, weaves, extensions and tight ponytails, and limit heat or chemicals on fragile areas.

Treatment is chosen according to the amount and activity of hair loss. Options may include corticosteroid medicine applied to or injected into limited patches, while more extensive disease may call for systemic treatment and monitoring.

Book a prompt dermatology visit if patches are spreading, the scalp is painful or burning, skin looks shiny, or the area has redness, crusting, drainage or marked scaling. Scarring hair loss can damage follicles, so those signs should not be managed as a cosmetic concern alone.

Also seek assessment when lashes or brows are being lost, nails develop new pits or roughness, or hair loss is causing substantial distress. Sudden shedding across the whole scalp warrants evaluation for a different or additional cause.

Ask whether the follicles show signs of scarring, whether traction or a scalp condition may also be present, and what changes would show that treatment is working. Discuss how prescribed medicine fits with your styling routine and which scalp symptoms should trigger an earlier follow-up.
