Alopecia areata affects women and men through the same immune-mediated process, but care may need to account for contraception, pregnancy, breastfeeding and medicines used for other conditions. Hair styling practices can also influence breakage and make the pattern harder to judge.

A clinician first checks that the loss is consistent with alopecia areata rather than diffuse shedding, traction, infection or a scarring disorder. Smooth focal patches support the diagnosis, while scalp tenderness, scale, broken shafts or loss of follicle openings can change the assessment.

Bring a list of medicines and supplements and mention menstrual changes, recent illness, pregnancy, breastfeeding or plans to conceive. Do not start, stop or share prescription treatments without guidance; some immune-modifying medicines require screening, laboratory checks or pregnancy precautions.

For small stable patches, topical corticosteroids or steroid injections into the skin may be considered. Oral corticosteroids or JAK inhibitor treatment may enter the conversation when loss is extensive or active, but their possible benefits must be balanced against individual risks. Gentle hair care, reduced tension from tight styles and sun protection for exposed scalp support comfort but do not replace medical treatment.

Request an early dermatology review when patches are expanding quickly, eyebrows or eyelashes are affected, or shedding becomes widespread. Pain, marked redness, crusting, discharge or scar-like skin warrants prompt assessment because those features are not typical of uncomplicated alopecia areata.

Contact the prescribing clinician if treatment brings fever, signs of infection, severe rash, breathing difficulty or another concerning reaction. Discuss low mood, social withdrawal or anxiety as part of care; psychological support and practical camouflage can sit alongside treatment.

Ask how active the condition appears, which option fits the affected area, and what would trigger a change in plan. Clarify medicine monitoring, infection precautions, reproductive safety, likely local side effects and how long an agreed trial should continue before it is reassessed.
