Alopecia areata in facial hair: what to know

The pattern may be limited to one facial area or occur alongside scalp patches. A dermatologist can distinguish it from shaving irritation, fungal infection, scarring disorders and other causes of facial hair loss.

Beard involvement often appears as a round or oval smooth gap within otherwise normal stubble. Eyebrow or eyelash involvement can be partial and uneven. The exposed skin may look normal, although some people notice tingling or mild irritation before shedding.

Alopecia areata is an immune-mediated condition in which inflammation disrupts active hair growth. Visible follicle openings usually remain, so regrowth is possible, but its timing, colour and texture are unpredictable. New hairs may initially be fine or lighter than surrounding facial hair.

Arrange a skin examination if a patch is new, enlarging or uncertain. Avoid repeatedly plucking hairs at the edge and pause fragranced products if the skin is irritated. Photographs taken in similar lighting can help show whether the border is changing.

Treatment is tailored to the site and extent. A clinician may discuss topical corticosteroids or small injections into affected beard skin; areas close to the eyes need particular caution. More extensive disease may prompt discussion of medicines that affect the immune response, with monitoring based on the medicine and your health.

Seek a prompt assessment for redness, scaling, crusting, pain, pus, broken hairs or shiny scar-like skin, because these findings can point to another diagnosis that needs different care. Eyelash loss with eye irritation also deserves timely review because lashes help protect the eye surface.

Book a routine dermatology visit if facial patches spread, scalp or body hair begins shedding, or nail pitting appears. Emotional distress is also a valid reason to seek support and discuss camouflage, grooming choices or treatment.
