Skin colour does not prevent alopecia areata or change its autoimmune basis. Contrast between the scalp and hair may make a patch visually striking, while tightly curled hair and beard grooming can create breakage or inflammation that deserves separate assessment.

Alopecia areata often presents with sharply defined, round or oval areas of non-scarring hair loss. The exposed skin usually looks smooth, although short tapered hairs may remain near an edge. Beard patches can be the only visible sign. Nail pitting or loss of eyebrow and eyelash hair can occur alongside scalp or beard changes.

A dermatologist also considers fungal infection, traction, shaving-related inflammation, breakage and patterned thinning. Treatment is matched to location and extent rather than ethnicity alone. Limited patches may be observed or treated with topical corticosteroids or small injections into the skin. More extensive disease may lead to discussion of oral immune-modifying treatment. Hair can regrow with a different colour or texture at first, and the course can include new episodes after regrowth.

Arrange an early assessment for rapidly spreading patches, loss of eyebrows or eyelashes, or hair loss accompanied by scalp pain, scaling, crusting, drainage or scarring. These features need a firm diagnosis because infection and inflammatory scarring conditions require different care.
