Alopecia areata and pregnancy

Hair may improve, remain unchanged or worsen during this period. Do not start, stop or continue a prescription solely because the medicine is topical or familiar; exposure depends on the product, dose, treated area and timing.

Alopecia areata causes immune-mediated patchy hair loss and can behave unpredictably. Pregnancy-related changes in the hair cycle can also alter fullness, while shedding after birth is often diffuse rather than confined to smooth patches. A dermatologist can determine whether one process or several are present.

The condition itself does not pass to the baby through contact and bald patches are not contagious. The practical concern is choosing care that fits the stage of pregnancy, the extent of loss, scalp symptoms and the person's preferences.

If you are planning pregnancy, pregnant or breastfeeding, give both your dermatologist and maternity clinician a full list of tablets, injections, scalp products and supplements. Include medicines used only occasionally. They can decide what to pause, replace or continue and explain how that choice changes across pregnancy and feeding.

Gentle hair care, camouflage products and hairpieces can help while treatment choices are limited. Avoid tight styles and harsh processing that add breakage or traction. Photograph patches at intervals under similar lighting so changes can be discussed without relying on memory.

Contact the prescribing clinician promptly if pregnancy occurs while you are using alopecia medication. Provide the medicine name, dose, route and when it was last used; do not assume that exposure has harmed the pregnancy, and do not make further dosing decisions without tailored advice.

Arrange a scalp review for sudden patch expansion, widespread shedding, eyebrow or eyelash loss, or painful, scaly or inflamed skin. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a severe medicine reaction. Significant distress, persistent low mood or inability to cope also deserves timely support.

Ask which diagnosis explains the current pattern, whether treatment can wait, and what is known about each medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Confirm who will coordinate changes, what non-drug options are suitable, and when hair loss should be reassessed after delivery.
