Allergy sneezing and a runny nose

Nasal allergy symptoms begin when the immune system reacts to something inhaled, such as dust-mite material or pet allergens. Sneezing may come in bursts, while discharge is often thin and clear. An itchy nose or eyes and symptoms that recur in the same setting add support to an allergy pattern.

A common cold, influenza, COVID-19, and sinusitis can also present with nasal symptoms. Fever, marked body aches, a sore throat, feeling generally unwell, facial pressure, or a change from the person's familiar pattern may point away from an uncomplicated allergy flare. Symptoms alone cannot always identify the cause.

Notice where and when symptoms start, then reduce the suspected exposure where practical. For dust-mite allergy, washing bedding and reducing dust-holding fabrics may help. For pet allergy, keeping the animal out of the bedroom and washing after close contact can reduce direct exposure.

Saline nasal rinses or sprays can clear mucus and allergens; use prepared saline or water made safe for nasal rinsing, and keep the device clean. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on antihistamines or a corticosteroid nasal spray. Correct spray direction and regular use matter, while decongestant nasal sprays should not be continued beyond their instructed course.

Arrange a clinical assessment if symptoms disturb sleep, affect daily activities, keep returning without a clear trigger, or do not improve with appropriate self-care. Seek advice for persistent facial pain, thick or blood-stained discharge, fever, one-sided blockage, reduced sense of smell, or symptoms that worsen after initially improving.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, throat tightness, collapse, or rapidly spreading hives. These features suggest a serious allergic reaction rather than an isolated nasal allergy and require immediate treatment.

Describe the timing, places, seasons, and exposures linked with symptoms, along with fever, pain, cough, or eye irritation. Ask whether the pattern fits allergic rhinitis, whether testing would change management, which nasal treatment suits your medical history, and how to check that your spray technique is effective.
