Allergy shots for pet allergies

Allergen immunotherapy exposes the immune system to carefully controlled amounts of the relevant pet allergen. Doses are usually increased gradually and then continued on a maintenance schedule. The aim is to make future exposure less likely to trigger troublesome sneezing, a runny nose, or itchy eyes; it does not remove the allergen from the environment.

A clinician first checks whether symptoms, exposure patterns, and allergy testing point to a pet allergen. Shots may be considered when avoidance and allergy medicine do not provide enough control, cause unwanted effects, or are difficult to sustain. Improvement is gradual, and some people respond more clearly than others.

Tell the allergy clinic about asthma, current medicines, pregnancy, previous injection reactions, and any illness on the day of an appointment. Follow the clinic's instructions about exercise and medicines around each injection. Remain at the clinic for the advised observation period because reactions can begin after the shot.

Continue practical exposure reduction while receiving treatment. Keep pets out of the bedroom, wash hands after close contact, clean soft furnishings, and use a suitable vacuum or air filter if recommended. Do not change an injection schedule or stop prescribed medicine without discussing the plan with the treating clinician.

Mild redness, itching, or swelling around the injection site can occur. Contact the clinic if a local reaction is large, worsening, or lasts longer than expected, or if allergy symptoms repeatedly flare after injections; the dose or schedule may need adjustment.

Get emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, swelling of the tongue or lips, faintness, confusion, or widespread hives after an injection. Use prescribed emergency medicine as directed while help is being arranged. Report any delayed reaction to the allergy team before the next dose.

Ask which allergen the shots will contain, how the diagnosis was confirmed, how often appointments are expected, and how progress will be assessed. Also clarify what to do after a missed dose, which reactions should be reported, whether asthma needs better control first, and when current allergy medicines might be reviewed.
