Relief for a Runny Nose Caused by Allergies

Clear, watery drainage with sneezing and itching supports an allergic pattern, particularly when symptoms follow pollen, pet or dusty-room exposure. Fever, body aches, sore throat or a distinct acute illness can instead accompany a respiratory infection.

When the nasal lining encounters an allergen, immune chemicals increase fluid production and stimulate sneezing. Allergic rhinitis commonly presents with a runny nose, itchy eyes or palate, repeated sneezing and variable congestion. The drainage is commonly thin and may irritate the skin around the nostrils.

The timing offers useful clues. Pollen symptoms may appear outdoors or during particular seasons, pet allergy may flare during or after animal contact, and dust-mite symptoms can be more noticeable in bed or while cleaning. An anti-inflammatory nasal spray may suit symptoms that recur or include blockage, but correct direction and regular use matter. Check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, treating a child, have other health conditions or take medicines that may interact.

Call for emergency help if nasal symptoms occur with throat or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, wheezing, faintness or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction. Seek prompt review for clear fluid draining continuously from one side after a head injury, or for severe headache, swelling around an eye, confusion or neck stiffness.

A clinician should assess discharge that is persistently one-sided, blood-stained, foul-smelling or accompanied by significant facial pain. Make a non-urgent appointment when symptoms disturb sleep or daily activities, keep returning despite avoidance measures, or remain uncontrolled after using treatment as directed.

Tell the clinician whether discharge is clear or coloured, what exposures precede it, and whether you also have itching, fever, pain or breathing symptoms. Ask which treatment targets your dominant symptoms, how to position a nasal spray, and whether recurring episodes justify testing for a specific allergen.
