Allergy medicine for skin hives

Hives are raised, itchy welts that can change shape, fade, and appear elsewhere. Antihistamines reduce the effect of histamine, which can lessen itch and welts; they do not replace emergency treatment for a severe allergic reaction.

Individual welts may be pale or skin-coloured in the centre with a red or darker surrounding area. On deeper skin tones, redness can be subtle, so raised texture, warmth, and itch may be clearer clues.

Angioedema is deeper swelling, often affecting the lips, eyelids, hands, or feet. It can occur with hives. Swelling involving the tongue or throat is dangerous because it can affect the airway.

Use the antihistamine dose on the label or prescribed plan, and do not increase it without professional advice. Check whether it causes sleepiness before driving. Avoid combining products until a pharmacist confirms that their ingredients do not overlap.

Cool the skin, wear loose clothing, and avoid scratching. Heat, alcohol, and pressure on the skin can aggravate some flares. Photograph changing welts and record new medicines, foods, infections, stings, or exposures that preceded them.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, throat tightness, wheezing, faintness, confusion, or swelling of the tongue or mouth. If you have a prescribed adrenaline auto-injector, follow your emergency plan and do not delay the call.

Seek medical review for hives that recur, remain widespread, follow a new medicine, or come with fever, bruising, painful lesions, or joint symptoms. A clinician can assess triggers and decide whether a different treatment plan is needed.
