Allergy medicine for skin symptoms

Oral antihistamines can help hives and itch driven by histamine. They do not treat every rash, and they do not replace moisturisers or anti-inflammatory creams when eczema-like inflammation is present. Some rashes need a diagnosis before any medicated cream is used.

Raised, moving welts are different from a dry, cracked patch, a blistering eruption or a warm painful area. Similar-looking skin changes can result from contact irritation, infection, medicine reactions, insect bites or long-term inflammatory conditions.

Sedating antihistamines can impair driving and concentration, while even non-drowsy products can affect some people. Steroid creams vary in strength and body-site suitability; using an unsuitable product on the face, eyelids or broken skin may cause harm.

Stop any new cosmetic or skin product that appears to trigger the problem, rinse the area gently, use a cool compress, and choose an unperfumed moisturiser. Keep fingernails short and avoid scratching, hot showers and fragranced products while the skin is inflamed.

Photograph a changing rash and note new medicines, foods, products, plants or occupational exposures. A pharmacist can advise on a suitable non-prescription option, but widespread, recurring or unexplained symptoms warrant clinical assessment.

Call emergency services if a rash comes with breathing difficulty, throat tightness, faintness, confusion, or swelling of the tongue or lips. Do not wait for an oral antihistamine to work when airway or circulation symptoms are developing.

Obtain urgent medical advice for blistering or peeling skin, mouth or eye sores, purple spots that do not fade when pressed, fever with marked illness, or a rapidly spreading painful rash. Seek routine review if itch disrupts sleep or treatment is not helping.

Ask what type of rash is suspected, which medicine treats its mechanism, where any cream can safely be applied, and which side effects should make you stop. Mention pregnancy, allergies and all prescription or non-prescription medicines.
