Allergy medicine for facial swelling

Do not wait for an antihistamine to work when anaphylaxis is possible. If you have been prescribed an adrenaline auto-injector for allergy emergencies, use it as instructed and call emergency services. Antihistamines do not replace adrenaline because they do not rapidly reverse dangerous airway swelling or a fall in blood pressure.

Angioedema can cause sudden puffiness around the eyelids, lips, or cheeks and may accompany hives. Food allergy is one possible trigger, but some medicines and non-allergic mechanisms can also produce angioedema. Painful, hot, red skin with fever may indicate cellulitis, while one-sided swelling with dental pain or facial pressure suggests a different source. Gradual swelling around both eyes or in the legs may need assessment for fluid retention.

Stop eating a suspected food and avoid taking another dose of a newly started non-essential over-the-counter product until a clinician or pharmacist advises you. Do not stop an essential prescribed medicine without urgent medical advice. Note when the swelling began, what was eaten or taken beforehand, and whether hives, vomiting, dizziness, voice change, or breathing symptoms occurred.

For mild, stable swelling without red flags, a pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine is appropriate and check for interactions. Avoid applying unprescribed creams near the eyes, and remove contact lenses if the eyelids are swollen or irritated.

Call emergency services now for difficulty breathing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, a hoarse voice, wheezing, faintness, confusion, collapse, or rapidly spreading swelling. Reactions can worsen after starting mildly. Prompt same-day assessment is also appropriate for facial swelling with fever, severe pain, redness that is spreading, eye pain, reduced vision, a dental infection, or no clear explanation.

Ask what type of swelling is suspected, whether any medicine could be responsible, and whether allergy testing would be useful. If anaphylaxis is a concern, request a written emergency plan and practical training on your prescribed auto-injector. Photographs taken as swelling develops can help if it subsides before the appointment.
