Allergy medication for cat exposure

Medicines control the allergic response but do not remove cat allergens from the environment. A pharmacist or clinician can match the formulation to nose, eye, skin or breathing symptoms and screen for drowsiness, interactions and medical conditions.

Cat allergy is a reaction to proteins from the animal, including proteins carried in skin particles and saliva. These particles can remain on soft furnishings and clothing, so symptoms may occur without touching the cat. Fur length does not reliably tell you how much reaction a particular person will have.

Pet allergy commonly presents with sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy watery eyes, cough or wheeze. Dust or pollen carried on fur can also be responsible, which is why a clear exposure history and, when useful, allergy assessment matter.

An oral antihistamine may help sneezing and itching, while a clinician or pharmacist may suggest a nasal spray for persistent nasal inflammation or allergy eye drops for eye symptoms. Technique matters for sprays and drops, and some antihistamines can impair alertness.

Reduce exposure as well: keep the cat out of the bedroom, wash hands after contact, clean fabrics and surfaces, and avoid touching the face after handling the animal. Keeping a cat in one room does not necessarily contain allergens because particles travel on air and clothing.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, rapidly worsening wheeze, blue or grey lips, collapse, or swelling of the tongue or throat. Anyone with asthma should follow their personal asthma action plan when cat exposure triggers breathing symptoms.

Arrange a review when symptoms disturb sleep, continue despite careful medicine use, or require frequent relief. Eye pain, light sensitivity, reduced vision or thick discharge needs assessment because those features do not fit simple allergic itching.

Explain where exposure occurs, how quickly symptoms begin and which body areas are affected. Ask whether testing would alter the plan, which medicine is suitable for regular or occasional exposure, how to use it correctly, and whether cough or wheeze requires a separate asthma assessment.
