What to know about allergy-friendly cats

A person may react more strongly to one cat than another, but coat length, hairlessness or low shedding does not confirm that living with a particular cat will be symptom-free.

Cat-allergy triggers are proteins found mainly in saliva and skin secretions. Grooming transfers them onto the coat, and tiny contaminated particles then move into dust, soft furnishings and clothes. This explains why a hairless cat can still cause symptoms and why reactions can occur in places where no cat is currently present.

Make the bedroom a cat-free area, close its door, and keep the cat away from pillows and upholstered seating. Wash your hands after stroking the cat and change clothes if close contact brings on symptoms. Damp-dust surfaces, wash removable fabrics and use a fine-particle vacuum without having the allergic person empty its container.

Before bringing a cat home, spend time with that specific animal on separate occasions and note any eye, nose, skin or breathing symptoms. This trial can inform the decision but cannot predict every future reaction. When symptoms continue, clinical assessment can distinguish cat allergy from other indoor triggers and guide testing or medicine choices.

Book a medical review if exposure to cats repeatedly brings on a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, rash, cough or disrupted sleep. Prompt assessment is needed for wheezing, chest tightness or breathlessness, especially in someone with asthma. Severe trouble breathing, collapse, or swelling involving the mouth or throat requires emergency help.

Bring notes about when symptoms start, which cats were present, how long symptoms last, and whether they improve away from the setting. Ask whether allergy testing is appropriate, how any nasal spray or antihistamine should be used, and what plan to follow if wheezing develops.
